Stopping in a kayak can be tricky. To stop, you need to reverse the forward stroke. Safety is paramount, so follow these steps to safely stop in a kayak.

1. Check behind you to make sure nothing is obstructing the path your paddle will take when you make the backward stroke.

2. Maintain a tight grip on the paddle as you face resistance when pushing against the current. Insert the back side of the paddle into the water at a high angle. The closer you can get to a 90-degree angle, the better.

3. Rotate your body so you are pointing toward the paddle, and use the additional leverage to push the paddle forward against the current in the direction of the bow.

4. Pull the paddle back, stopping when you get to your hip. Keep the paddle in this position until you stop. Don’t pull the paddle back farther, because this will cause you to turn.

Afshan Lakha is a co-founder and principal of Bellevue, Washington-based Lakha Investments Company. Outside of her business endeavors, Afshan Lakha is a patron of the arts and supporter of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM).

The Pacific Northwest’s leading center for visual arts, SAM has displayed world-class art from both local and international artists since 1933. In 1994, SAM added the Seattle Asian Art Museum, followed by the Olympic Sculpture Park in 2005. It continues to feature rotating and permanent exhibitions in Downtown Seattle.

One upcoming exhibition will feature Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors, a look at five decades of her use of fully-mirrored rooms in art. Her first mirror room, which will be prominently featured, uses multiple mirrors and piles of painted tubers to create a seemingly endless realm of polka dots. Her more recent work relies more on light, darkness, and sculptural elements, using hanging lights and mirrors to put viewers in a surreal and seemingly endless space.

Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors will run from June 30 through September 10, 2017.

United Way King County Seeks Volunteers on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Involved in real estate for several decades, Afshan Lakha works as principle for Lakha Investment Corporation, LLC, located in Bellevue, Washington. Dedicated to giving back to her community, Afshan Lakha supports several local organizations including United Way King County (UWKC).

Located in Seattle, UWKC improves lives through community involvement. It focuses on improving education, health, and incomes to build a stronger community and a higher quality of life. The organization reaches out to people to volunteer, donate, and take action to help those who need it most. According to the organization, 96 cents of every dollar donated goes directly toward the community and its needs.

One event hosted by the UWKC is its MLK Day of Service. Held each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this event encourages people who have the day off work or school to come out and give back to the community. The 2016 MLK Day of Service saw 2,300 volunteers complete 140 projects and donate 9,100 volunteer hours. The 2017 event is scheduled for January 16.
